I'm going to skip over the usual anointing of Bob Dylan that usually comes with talk of this soundtrack. The guy is pure genius, always has been, always will be. I think the movie missed the mark, but I appreciate the effort to put to film the impressive journey and life of America's most treasured songwriter.
Now for the music. Its really quite impressive, not only the material covered, but the range of artists chosen to put their own spin on Dylan's classic works. Standouts here include "Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again" by Cat Power, "Simple Twist of Fate" by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" by The Hold Steady, and "The Wicked Messenger" by The Black Keys.
There are many less than obvious track choices here, which saves this 4LP set from being just another Dylan greatest hits package. It features some of Dylan's best writing and the covers all add something new. I would urge any fan of Dylan's to check out this compilation, you will not be disappointed. Plus, listening to these 4LP's is a better use of your time than watching the movie.
